Featured 3.18-3.24.19 | The restaurant business is not for the faint of heart. It’s famous for being fickle, male-dominated and almost impossible to find success in. Unless you’re Linda Derschang, the oft-called Restaurant Whisperer of Seattle, who has, in fact, found incredible success with not one restaurant, but with a staggering 12 over the past 25+ years. It all started in 1994 with the eponymous Linda’s Tavern (tagline: a nice place for nice people), which quickly became one of the city’s most beloved dive bars, and which also marked the beginning of her partnership with her friends at Sub Pop Records, the label that brought us Nirvana and Soundgarden. Are you sensing the vibe here? Turns out that vibe (which includes a love for punk rock and entertaining and, surprisingly, a distaste for cooking) is the secret recipe to Linda’s success. Each of her eateries has a distinct design, personality and cult following that has earned her the title of Seattle’s unofficial Queen, and it’s an honor that can only be attributed to her dynamic and badass — you guessed it — vibe. The Upstate New York native has certainly brought her Midas touch to the Emerald City since landing in 1987, and she’s leading the charge for a generation of women in redefining what the restaurant business is and what it will become. We can’t wait to see what she’s planning next. Welcome to Linda’s week.
