Lighting is one of the easiest and quickest ways to add ambience. Think twinkle lights, hurricane lanterns, hanging lanterns — the more the merrier. Buy pillar and votive candles in bulk to easily replenish your vessels all season long. If your outdoor space is sunny then invest in solar lanterns and lights that can be charged during the day to illuminate your space at night.
2. Set up A Bar Cart
Nothing says party more than a welcoming bar where your friends can easily fix their own drinks. A bar area can be anything from a rolling cart that can be moved in and out to a simple tray filled with booze. Go all out and stock your bar with cool glasses, coasters, reusable straws, and drink umbrellas as well as the obvious bar basics.
3. Add Greenery
Another quick fix is to add pots filled with herbs, flowers and succulents. Herbs are a necessity for summer cooking and also look beautiful in pots as décor. Bonus points for being wonderfully fragrant! Succulents are low-maintenance and difficult to kill (we’ve tried) so are a great option for black thumbs. Use all different sized pots grouped together for a lush look. For big impact, fill one pot with a tall, dramatic plant which will serve as the focal point of your outdoor space.
4. Freshen outdoor seating
Adding new seating instantly changes the look of your outdoor space. Purchase a new pair of comfy lounge chairs or a few poufs, stools or side tables that can be repurposed as seating when needed. Game. Changer.
5. Fire Pit
Nothing is better than gathering around a warm, cracking fire with friends. Depending on the size of your outdoor space, choose between small fire bowls that can sit on a coffee table or larger pits that can be a destination space. There are tons of stylish – and affordable – options so pick one that works for you!
6. Update your Outdoor Serving Pieces and Linens
We’re all about cheap and cheerful for outdoors entertaining. Buy fresh napkins and placemats to replace stained ones from summers past. We’re big fans of light melamine plates and trays that won’t break if dropped and are light enough to carry in and out.
7. Make summer nights cozy with extra throws and pillows
A great outdoor space is one where people want to hang out all day – and all night. Make it super comfy with small and large throw cushions, cuddly throws and lush sheepskin.
