We all know that the fashion industry is one of the greatest enemies of sustainability, but there are tons of companies out there working hard to change that, and Kara Ladd is in the mix. A former fashion mag babe (Cosmopolitan and Italian Vogue), she’s now a successful fashion consultant and sustainable fashion advocate with her brand, Boundless by Kara. We love what she’s all about, and clearly she’s just the woman to dish out advice on how to keep your closet equal parts stylish and ethical. Read on for the brands she’s loving in the eco brand space and get ready to really clean out your closet.
1. Maggie Marilyn
I consider Maggie Marilyn a golden girl sustainable fashion brand — fun, conscious and oh-so charming. The made-in-New-Zealand label is fit for the modern gal, embodying a strong, yet graceful take on sustainable style with bold tailoring and feminine frills, portraying that fashionable females can be both powerful and poised. The brand has channeled that energy to challenge both consumers and the fashion industry, developing transparent and mindful innovations like biodegradable packaging — a win-win for your closet and climate change. I personally live in her pajama trousers.
The name speaks for itself, right? AMUR has been one of my go-to’s for summer festivities — weddings, darties, brunch, — you name it. Their use of natural, regenerated and certified-organic textiles literally and figuratively shines through the brand’s elegant and floral-infused aesthetic. The dresses are definitely my favorite with their seamless fit and a unique twist on classic silhouettes. I can’t live without this yellow ruffled tea-length dress by them.
A classic, quality leather jacket has been a closet staple for me for as long as I can remember. I picked up my beloved Deadwood biker jacket a few years ago and wear it almost everyday. I will have it forever. It’s made from rescued deadstock skins, repurposed vintage apparel and upcycled post-production waste — a true green gals dream. This brand is the epitome of conscious and cool.

I’ve walked around the world and back in these sustainable sneaks — literally! From Costa Rica and Cali to Dubai and Bali, my white Veja sneakers have seen it all. Despite my love affair with the classic white Esplar’s (made out of wild rubber, organic cotton and leather), Madewell recently collaborated with the brand on a metallic and star-studded shoe that spoke to me. I even found them on Poshmark at 50% to double-down on my eco-conscious efforts. In my opinion, these sneakers put dad shoes to shame.
Soko is a pioneering ethical accessories brand layered in social impact and technological innovation. Just like you may scroll and swipe through your apps, Soko’s game-changing “virtual factory” connects independent artisans around the world to the brand, enabling more economic opportunities for artisans at 5x their marginalized wages. The brand embraces mod, organic shapes using recycled brass and reclaimed materials whenever possible, creating covetable pieces that both last a lifetime and have a lasting impact.
The behno bag is a recent addition to the Boundless family, but no less loved to say the least. Behno is a conscious luxury accessories line that upholds old-age craftsmanship techniques with an infusion of new-age design. The modern silhouettes are simply exquisite and are bound to score you a double-take on the streets with their vibrant hues. My personal favorite is the Amanda Belt Bag in metallic — I feel like a chic space trooper strutting through the New York streets.
7. Brother Vellies
Brother Vellies (and its founder, Aurora James,) exudes effortless cool with an eco-edge. With a constant eye on sustainability, the brand makes sure to help sustain artisanal jobs in South Africa, Ethiopia, Morocco, and other places where traditional craft is on the brink of disappearing by working with local artisans and giving them training and fair wages. You can also tell that James has a ton of fun with her designs playing with feathers, fur and ruffles. Let’s just say I feel like a conscious Carrie Bradshaw everytime I rock her shoes.
